Dallas Cowboys’ Jerry Jones Announces Coaching Decision

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones left AT&T Stadium on Thursday night calling himself extraordinarily disappointed, then made clear that disappointment would not, for now, reach the coaching staff.

The Cowboys had come in at 2-2, on national television, against a winless opponent led by an undrafted rookie quarterback. A 24-16 home loss, three turnovers, and a defense that looked stuck in place left the owner’s box looking as frustrated as the crowd sounded.

In the tunnel afterward, Jones summed up the night in a short, repeated phrase: “Extraordinarily, extraordinarily disappointed.”

He was not ready to turn that feeling into a staff move. Asked whether a change at play-caller was on the table for defensive coordinator Christian Parker, whose unit has slid as the season has gone on, Jones called the idea “premature.”

That was the word he used, and he left it there. One bad Thursday, he suggested, was not yet a reason to rearrange the sideline.

The tape still made the question hard to ignore. Dallas gave up 416 yards, including 241 on 39 carries, a 6.2-yard average. Bucky Irving accounted for 165 of those rushing yards and rarely looked catchable.

The Cowboys also failed to hold the ball. Two tipped interceptions went the other way, the last of them by Alex Anzalone, which ended a late push to tie. Cornerback DaRon Bland had what looked like a pick-six rattle off his hands.

Jones did not hide from the missed chance.

“You really do need to get it done when it’s there to take,” he said. “They basically were really physical. That was surprising. They got a great victory here tonight. It was a tough loss for us. We missed a great opportunity to build something.”

With the rest of the NFC East dealing with its own problems, the night had looked like a chance to seize the division. It became another night of explaining a defense that could not get off the field.

What Jones would entertain is more talent, not a new coordinator. He said he remains willing to make another trade if it raises the level of the defensive roster, arguing that what Dallas put on the field was not good enough.

That is a familiar Jones answer: keep looking at the personnel, leave the coaching structure alone until the evidence is clearer.

For Parker, the reprieve is real and narrow. Jones is not making a change just yet. He also did not promise that premature would stay the answer if nights like this keep arriving.

The Cowboys are still early in the season. After Thursday, they are also a team whose owner is already measuring how long he is willing to wait.
