The 32-year-old threw his helmet in frustration following the first pitch of his at-bat and was replaced by James Triantos. Early indications point to an oblique injury, a diagnosis that typically requires significant recovery time.
According to reporting from ESPN’s Jesse Rogers, the issue is likely an oblique strain that could sideline Swanson for four to six weeks or longer, depending on its severity.
That timeline would potentially keep him out through the end of the regular season and possibly into the early stages of the postseason if the Cubs advance.
Manager Craig Counsell underscored the defensive impact of the absence, calling Swanson one of the better shortstops in the game and expressing hope that the injury is not severe. Nico Hoerner is expected to shift over to shortstop to fill the gap in the meantime.
Swanson’s value to the Cubs extends well beyond his offensive numbers. A two-time National League Gold Glove winner and two-time All-Star, he has long been regarded as a cornerstone of Chicago’s infield defense and base-running presence.
While his batting average has dipped this season, he has still contributed 18 home runs, 66 RBI, and 17 stolen bases through 118 games, posting a 3.3 WAR that reflects his overall impact. Losing that level of defensive reliability and experience could force the Cubs to make meaningful adjustments as they navigate the final stretch of the schedule.

Maintaining that Wild Card cushion will require continued strong play, especially with one of their top defenders unavailable.
The same afternoon also saw the return of pitcher Edward Cabrera from the injured list. Making his first start since late June after dealing with hamstring and adductor issues, Cabrera struggled and was lifted after 3.2 innings, allowing seven runs.
His performance pushed his season ERA to 5.68, adding another layer of concern for a club already managing injuries in a tight playoff race.
