The Chicago Cubs made a quiet but notable roster move amid their weekend series against the St. Louis Cardinals, transferring veteran right-hander Shelby Miller to Triple-A Iowa on a rehab assignment.
The announcement came as the clubs split the first two games of the set at Wrigley Field, with the Cardinals taking Saturday’s contest 8-4 behind a stunning three-homer debut from rookie Joshua Baez.
Miller has not appeared in a major league game this season. The 35-year-old signed a two-year contract with the Cubs in February that guarantees him at least $2.5 million, a deal struck with the understanding that he would miss most or all of 2026 while recovering from Tommy John surgery performed the previous October.
That procedure repaired a torn ulnar collateral ligament and flexor tendon, an injury that typically sidelines pitchers for a full calendar year.
His progress has outpaced early expectations. After working through a throwing program in Arizona, including extended spring training games, Miller was cleared to begin affiliated competition.
The move to Iowa marks a significant step, placing him in game situations against higher-level competition as the Cubs evaluate his readiness for a potential late-season return to the big-league bullpen.
Miller brings a lengthy track record. Across parts of 13 major league seasons he has made 302 appearances, including 133 starts, compiling a 4.04 ERA over 902⅓ innings with 789 strikeouts.
Last year, he posted a sharp 2.74 ERA in 46 innings split between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers, striking out 54 batters and showing the kind of effectiveness that made him an attractive target even while recovering.
He was an All-Star in 2015 during his time with the Cardinals and has suited up for a third of the teams in the league, including a brief and forgettable two-inning stint with the Cubs themselves in 2021.
For a Cubs pitching staff already bolstered by midseason additions, Miller’s potential availability in September could provide valuable depth.
Manager Craig Counsell has previously noted how hard the veteran has worked to reach this stage of recovery, acknowledging that the organization is farther along than it anticipated when the contract was signed. The club is expected to remain cautious, allowing Miller to build up innings and pitch on consecutive days before considering activation.
Whether he contributes this year or focuses fully on 2027, the rehab assignment represents a positive development for both player and team.
