The Chicago Cubs added some extra organizational depth this week without much fanfare, signing 29-year-old infielder Jackson Cluff to a minor-league contract while they hosted the White Sox at Wrigley Field.

The move came on Tuesday as the two Chicago clubs played the second game of their series, shortly after the Cubs had taken a 7-5 win in a back-and-forth opener the night before.

Cluff reported immediately to Triple-A Iowa, joining the club in Toledo. He had spent the first part of the 2026 season with the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse, where he appeared in 62 games before being released earlier this month.

His numbers there were limited: a .169 batting average, 30 hits, six home runs, 17 RBIs, 33 runs scored, and 14 stolen bases.

A sixth-round selection by the Washington Nationals in the 2019 draft, Cluff has now completed seven full seasons in the minors without a major league debut.

He spent several years in the Nationals system before landing with the Mets. At this stage of his career he is viewed primarily as a defensive-minded shortstop who can also handle other infield spots and still run the bases reasonably well.

For a Cubs team sitting in second place in the National League Central at 73-53 after 126 games, the signing is a low-risk way to stock the upper minors.

Iowa already has some extra bodies on the way, including infielder Matt Shaw beginning a rehab assignment.

Extra infielders at that level can prove useful as September approaches and the parent club looks to manage workloads and possible injuries while staying in the playoff mix.

The Cubs have been solid at home this year, posting a 37-26 mark at Wrigley. After they finish the series with the White Sox they head to Seattle to open a road trip against the Mariners.

In that context, a quiet addition like Cluff is simply part of the late-summer roster shuffling that most contending clubs undertake.

He is not expected to force his way onto the major league roster immediately, but he gives the organization another experienced option if injuries or roster needs arise down the stretch.
