The Washington Commanders released outside linebacker Marvin Jones Jr. from the practice squad on Thursday with an injury settlement, ending a brief stay that never reached the active roster, via the NFL transaction wire.

Jones, 22, had joined Washington only on Sept. 16, when the team signed him and linebacker Austin Keys to the practice squad after placing Jordan Magee on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

On Sept. 29, the Commanders moved Jones to the practice-squad injured list with an undisclosed injury. Two days later they released him with a settlement, a standard way for a club to part with an injured practice-squad player rather than keep him on that list. The nature of the injury was not disclosed, and Jones had not been elevated for a game.

The move closes a short first NFL chapter for an undrafted rookie who bounced between two organizations before the regular season was a month old.

After going unselected in the 2026 draft, Jones signed with the Seattle Seahawks in May. Seattle waived him on Aug. 30 as part of final roster cuts, brought him back to the practice squad the next day, and released him from that squad on Sept. 5.

Washington picked him up less than two weeks later. He did not appear in a regular-season game for either club.

Jones arrives with a well-traveled college résumé and a familiar name.

The 6-foot-5, 245-pound edge player spent 2022 and 2023 at Georgia, where he was part of the 2022 College Football Playoff national championship team, then played at Florida State in 2024 and Oklahoma in 2025. He prepped at American Heritage in Plantation, Florida. He is the son of former NFL linebacker Marvin Jones.

For Washington, the transaction is a small piece of a thin linebacker picture.

The Commanders, 1-2 and fourth in the NFC East under Dan Quinn, already have Magee on injured reserve and, on the same day they put Jones on the practice-squad injured list, placed Leo Chenal on injured reserve with a fractured neck.

Practice-squad spots have turned over quickly around the position, with Ale Kaho shuttling between the practice squad and the active roster and Charles Snowden added on Sept. 30.

An injury settlement generally pays the player for a set number of weeks and keeps him from re-signing with that team until the settlement window ends.

Jones is then free to sign elsewhere once healthy and eligible.

At 22, with no regular-season snaps and only a few weeks on an NFL practice squad, he is still early in a career that has not yet had a chance to settle.
