Fox Sports commentator Colin Cowherd declared Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix “in trouble” Tuesday after a poor showing in the team’s season-opening loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
“I look at this thing right now and I’m telling you: Bo Nix is in trouble… He is getting in the way,” Cowherd said on “The Herd.”
The official account for the show posted the clip Tuesday afternoon, noting Cowherd was “OUT on Bo Nix after his disastrous game against the Chiefs.”
Nix completed 17 of 28 passes for 131 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the 31-10 defeat on Monday Night Football. He was sacked four times and fumbled three times, losing one.
The Broncos managed just 176 total yards, including 61 on the ground. Their longest play went for 19 yards.
Kansas City running back Kenneth Walker III rushed for a career-high 173 yards and scored two touchdowns in his Chiefs debut. Patrick Mahomes threw for 184 yards and two scores while adding a rushing touchdown in his return from knee surgery.
Denver answered Kansas City’s opening score with Nix’s 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end Evan Engram, tying the game at 7-7. The Broncos scored only a field goal the rest of the way.
Nix called the performance “pretty pitiful” and a “nasty wake-up call.” He said the team “shot ourselves in the foot and literally gave ourselves no chance to succeed.”
Coach Sean Payton described it as “obviously not a good evening.” New offensive coordinator Davis Webb called plays for the first time after Payton handed off those duties.
The Broncos entered the season with high expectations after going 14-3 last year, winning the AFC West and reaching the AFC championship game. Nix missed that title game after fracturing his ankle in a playoff win over Buffalo.
Denver acquired wide receiver Jaylen Waddle in the offseason. He finished with one catch for two yards. Courtland Sutton had two receptions for 11 yards.
Cowherd has previously praised Nix, comparing him at times to a right-handed Steve Young and saying he would take the Broncos quarterback over Lamar Jackson in a fourth-quarter comeback situation.
The Broncos host the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Kansas City hosts the Indianapolis Colts that night.
Nix is 26 and in his third NFL season after being drafted 12th overall out of Oregon in 2024.
The loss snapped Denver’s recent dominance in the AFC West rivalry. The Chiefs had won nine straight division titles before last season.
Walker’s 220 rushing yards as a team for Kansas City marked one of the more physical performances against a Broncos defense that missed numerous tackles.
Payton’s roster additions and scheme changes were expected to build on last year’s success. Instead, the opener exposed issues in protection, execution and tackling.
Cowherd’s comments added to the scrutiny surrounding Nix and the new play-caller as Denver tries to rebound quickly.
