The Cleveland Guardians made a quiet but notable roster move this weekend while locked in a tight series against the Chicago White Sox.

On the heels of a 6-3 loss on Saturday that left the two American League Central clubs even at one win apiece, word emerged that the organization had released right-handed pitcher Alaska Abney.

The 26-year-old had been pitching for the Columbus Clippers, Cleveland’s Triple-A affiliate, and never reached the major-league roster during his time in the system.

Abney arrived in the Guardians organization as a 15th-round selection in the 2021 MLB Draft. Over the next several seasons he steadily climbed the minor-league ladder, logging time across multiple levels and establishing himself as a reliable arm out of the bullpen and occasionally in longer relief.

His cumulative minor-league ledger stands at 176 appearances, an 18-5 record, and a polished 3.28 ERA. His two best seasons came in 2024 and 2025, when he posted ERAs south of 2.00.

Those numbers reflected consistent strike-throwing, the ability to miss bats, and an overall command that kept him relevant on prospect lists even if he never cracked the very top tier of Cleveland’s pitching pipeline.

Entering 2026, Abney still carried the reputation of a pitcher who could help a big-league bullpen on short notice.

Early in the season, he delivered the kind of outing that once fueled optimism around him, punching out the side in a clean inning for Double-A Akron and reminding observers of the swing-and-miss stuff that had made him a steady performer in previous years.

Yet opportunities at the highest level remained scarce, and by mid-August the organization decided the time had come to part ways.

The Guardians themselves sit in third place in the AL Central with a 58-60 record through 118 games, having gone just 3-7 in their last ten contests. After finishing the White Sox series they will travel to Detroit for a set against the Tigers.

Meanwhile the White Sox, currently first in the division at 60-56, prepare to host the Cincinnati Reds.

For Abney the release opens a new chapter; at 26 he still possesses the minor-league track record and the stuff that could attract interest from another club looking for depth before the 2026 season ends.

Whether that opportunity materializes will be one of the quieter storylines to watch in the weeks ahead.
