Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid delivered a concerning injury update Thursday regarding second-year defensive end Ashton Gillotte, confirming the young rusher suffered a ruptured plantar fascia.

The diagnosis came after Gillotte left practice earlier in the week, adding another layer of frustration to a training camp already marked by several setbacks along the defensive line.

Gillotte, selected in the third round of the 2025 draft out of Louisville, entered this season with an opportunity to take on a larger role. The 6-foot-3, 270-pound edge rusher appeared in every game as a rookie, finishing with 38 tackles, 1.5 sacks and an interception while learning Steve Spagnuolo’s scheme.

With veterans departing in free agency, he had been competing for increased snaps and a potential starting spot next to George Karlaftis. That progress was interrupted first by a hamstring strain in late July that caused him to miss time. After returning, he tweaked his right foot during a one-on-one drill and did not finish the session.

Reid grouped Gillotte’s injury with others around the roster, describing them collectively as nicks and bruises. The specific nature of a ruptured plantar fascia, however, points to a more substantial recovery.

The plantar fascia is the thick connective tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot, supporting the arch and providing shock absorption when a player plants, cuts or pursues.

While the injury typically does not require surgery, it commonly sidelines athletes for at least three months. That timeline would keep Gillotte out well into the regular season, even if the Chiefs remain optimistic about his eventual return.

Reid noted that Gillotte will not play in the near term, though he later indicated the team’s current ailments are not viewed as season-long problems.

The most likely path is for Kansas City to keep him on the 53-man roster through final cuts and then place him on injured reserve, allowing him to rehabilitate without losing his spot.

The absence creates an immediate challenge for a defensive end group already thinned by an ACL tear suffered earlier in camp by another young player.

The recent signing of veteran Emmanuel Ogbah and additional opportunities for Felix Anudike-Uzomah will now take on greater importance as the unit tries to maintain its pass-rush production.

Gillotte’s setback is a reminder of how quickly depth can be tested in the NFL.

A player who appeared poised for a second-year leap now faces a lengthy rehabilitation, leaving the Chiefs to adjust their rotation as they close training camp and turn toward the preseason.
