As the MLB trade deadline approaches, the Chicago Cubs remain firmly in the conversation surrounding Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, even as the price tag and competition for the two-time American League Cy Young winner continue to escalate.

According to Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic, the Cubs have not closed the door on pursuing the left-hander, viewing him as a potential centerpiece addition that could elevate their pitching staff for a serious postseason push.

The Cubs’ front office, led by president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer, has made clear its intention to strengthen the pitching corps with multiple additions before the deadline. Skubal represents the highest-upside option in that search.

Mooney and Sharma noted that while the sky-high asking price and the presence of teams with stronger farm systems could ultimately push Chicago in a different direction, the organization has yet to rule out a deal for the Tigers’ ace.

Skubal’s track record of dominance over the past two seasons makes him an obvious fit for a Cubs team already positioned as one of the stronger clubs in the National League and eyeing a deep October run.

Chicago’s elite defense and organizational belief in looking past surface-level numbers give the club confidence that the right arm, even one carrying a premium cost, can thrive in its environment.

Adding a pitcher of Skubal’s caliber would not only fortify the rotation for the stretch run but also provide a potential bridge toward retaining high-end talent in free agency down the line.

Of course, significant hurdles remain. Other contenders, including clubs with deeper prospect pools, are expected to compete aggressively for Skubal.

The Tigers, recognizing the value of their ace as he heads toward free agency, are positioned to demand a substantial return. For the Cubs, any deal would require careful calculation of both short-term impact and long-term roster construction. Yet the fact that Skubal remains on the table at all underscores the ambition currently driving Chicago’s deadline strategy.

In recent years, Hoyer has spoken about learning from past near-misses on elite pitchers and the value of acting decisively when a high-character veteran with a proven track record becomes available. That perspective continues to shape the Cubs’ approach.

Whether Skubal ultimately lands in Chicago or not, the mere possibility illustrates how seriously the organization is taking its opportunity to build a championship-caliber pitching staff.

With the deadline hours away, the Cubs are keeping their options open at the very top of the market, and Tarik Skubal remains very much among them.
