The Chicago Cubs dropped a close 6-5 decision to the Seattle Mariners on Friday night at T-Mobile Park, opening their series on the road with a hard-fought loss that left them searching for answers in the National League Central race.
While the team battled on the field, the organization also provided the latest word on infielder Matt Shaw, who has been working his way back from injury. Shaw began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa on Aug. 19 and was scheduled to take the field again on Aug. 21.
Manager Craig Counsell outlined the plan clearly, noting that Shaw will play in multiple games this week. The goal remains building up to consecutive contests the following week as the club evaluates his readiness for a return to the majors.
Before the injury sidelined him, Shaw posted a .246 batting average across 56 games. He collected 32 hits, including four home runs, drove in 20 runs, scored 20 times and swiped four bases during that stretch.
Observers tracking his progress have shared updates from the minor league level. Tommy Birch reported: “Matt Shaw hitting second and playing 2B again for the @IowaCubs as he continues his rehab assignment tonight at Toledo.”
Later in the same contest, Jason Kempf offered a midgame snapshot: “Matt Shaw update: He is 2-3 with a pair of RBI for the @IowaCubs through four innings of play here in Toledo.”
Team officials have indicated Shaw could rejoin the big league club later this month or early next month, depending on how the remainder of his rehab assignment unfolds and how his body responds to the increased workload.
Chicago currently sits second in the National League Central with a 74-55 record through 129 games. The Cubs trail the first-place Milwaukee Brewers by six games as the season enters its final stretch.
The tight contest against Seattle underscored the need for additional production in the lineup. Shaw’s versatility at second base and his ability to contribute offensively have made him a player many inside and outside the organization are eager to see back in the fold.
As the series with the Mariners continues, the Cubs will keep a close eye on Shaw’s performance in Iowa while focusing on climbing closer in the division standings. Any decision on activating him will come only after he clears the remaining steps of his recovery plan.
For now, the organization remains patient yet optimistic that the young infielder can provide a boost when the timing is right.
