The Chicago Cubs keep moving through August without Matt Shaw in the major league lineup, but the organization is not treating his absence as a holding pattern.
On Tuesday, while the big club prepared for the second game of its series in Phoenix after a 7-0 win over Arizona a night earlier, Shaw was scheduled to play left field for Triple-A Iowa.
It is the first time he has worked that position on this rehab assignment, a small but telling adjustment after weeks spent getting his left hand healthy enough to swing and field without limitation.
Shaw has not appeared in an MLB game since June 28, when a foul ball against Milwaukee left him with a sprained left hand. The Cubs placed him on the injured list the next day.
It was his second trip to the IL this season after a mid-back issue earlier in the year. Before the hand injury interrupted a productive stretch in which he had been seeing regular time in right field while Seiya Suzuki dealt with knee discomfort, Shaw was hitting .246 with four home runs, 20 RBIs, 20 runs and four stolen bases across 56 games.
The numbers were modest in volume because of the missed time, but they showed a 24-year-old first-round pick still finding his footing in his second big-league season.
The Cubs sent him to Iowa on August 19. Early rehab games had him at second base and in familiar outfield spots. Moving him to left field now looks like more than a box-score experiment.
Ian Happ, the club’s everyday left fielder and a four-time Gold Glove winner, is in the final year of his contract. His 2026 batting line has been a struggle, and Chicago already faces a crowded offseason in which several notable contracts expire.
Fans and reporters have begun asking whether a younger, cheaper, more versatile option like Shaw could inherit left field if Happ is allowed to walk.
That remains speculation. Shaw is still a utility piece by training, drafted out of Maryland in 2023 and capable of playing the infield corners and the outfield.
A clean return from the hand sprain and a few more productive days in Iowa would at least give manager Craig Counsell another body to evaluate down the stretch.
The Cubs sit in the thick of a playoff race in the National League Central. Every healthy, flexible bat matters, and the quiet decision to test Shaw in left field suggests the front office is already thinking about how the roster might look once this season ends.
