The Chicago Bears are bringing wide receiver Scotty Miller back to the practice squad, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday.

The move returns a familiar name to Halas Hall less than two weeks after the club released him from the same unit.

Miller, 29, had signed with Chicago in May and spent the offseason and training camp with the team. He did not survive the cut to 53, stayed on the practice squad, and was released on September 24.

Re-signing him is a low-cost way to restore a veteran option the staff already evaluated, without committing an active-roster spot.

The path that led him here has been a long one for a late-round receiver.

Tampa Bay selected the Bowling Green product in the sixth round of the 2019 draft, 208th overall, and he played out a four-year rookie deal worth about $2.6 million, with a little more than $127,000 guaranteed.

His best season came in 2020, when he caught 33 passes for 501 yards and three touchdowns and was part of the Buccaneers team that won Super Bowl LV. Injuries and a thinner role followed in Tampa, and he left after the 2022 season.

Atlanta signed him to a one-year contract in March 2023. He appeared in all 17 games that year and finished with 11 catches for 161 yards and two scores, still operating mostly as a depth piece and vertical complement rather than a featured target.

Pittsburgh brought him in in May 2024. He spent parts of the next two seasons moving between the active roster and the practice squad, then appeared in 13 games in 2025 and caught nine passes for 62 yards.

Across seven seasons with the Buccaneers, Falcons, and Steelers, Miller has 99 receptions for 1,216 yards and six touchdowns in 93 games, plus a rushing score. At 5-foot-9, he has never been a volume receiver.

What he has offered is speed on the outside, special-teams versatility, and the institutional knowledge of a player who has already won a championship.

For Chicago, the timing fits a season in which receiver depth has been reshuffled. The Bears traded D.J. Moore to Buffalo in the offseason, and the group that remains has carried more of the passing game while the club works around Caleb Williams’ hamstring strain.

A practice-squad signing does not change the Week 5 depth chart. It does give the Bears a known body they can elevate if injuries hit, and it leaves Miller available to other clubs unless he is called up.

At this stage of his career, that is the role he has occupied for several seasons: a veteran who can be added quickly, used sparingly, and released again if the roster math changes.
