Chicago Bears Get Major Caleb Williams Injury Update

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams left Sunday’s 9-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings with a right hamstring injury after going down on a scramble in the fourth quarter.

Williams was hurt with Chicago trailing 6-3 and facing first-and-goal at the Vikings 6-yard line. He took off to his left, then dropped to the turf without being touched and grabbed his right leg.

Trainers helped the third-year quarterback off the field. He could not put weight on the leg and was later carted to the locker room.

The Bears officially ruled him out with a hamstring injury. Backup Tyson Bagent entered, and Chicago’s drive ended when Cairo Santos’ 23-yard field-goal try was blocked.

Williams finished 15 of 26 for 138 yards with one interception. He added five carries for 42 yards on a rainy afternoon at Soldier Field.

The Vikings improved to 2-0. The Bears dropped to 1-1 after scoring 59 points in their season opener the week before.

Head coach Ben Johnson said after the game that the team would know more Monday.

“I’m actually happy it’s nothing with the knee you know that was my first inclination,” Johnson said. “Hamstring can be pretty damaging as well, we’ll see how bad it is tomorrow and we’ll go from there.”

Johnson added that he had spoken with Williams and that the quarterback was in good spirits.

Reporters later saw Williams walking under his own power in the locker-room area. He showed only a slight limp and was not using crutches.

Terrence Tomlin of The Bigs Media wrote that Williams was smiling and in good spirits with a very light limp and nothing wrapped around the injured leg.

Patrick Norton of CHGO Sports said Williams was walking on his own without a noticeable limp. Adam Jahns of CHGO Sports noted he came through the locker room under his own power with maybe a slight limp.

The early signs suggested the injury might not be as severe as it first appeared when Williams went down in visible pain.

Hamstring strains are graded by severity. A Grade I strain can keep a player out about two weeks. A Grade II typically means three to six weeks. A Grade III can require eight to 12 weeks or surgery.

Fox Sports Radio injury expert Dr. Evan Jeffries said Williams’ return timeline would depend on the grade of the strain.

Fantasy Points analyst Jeff Mueller said the fact Williams was walking around the locker room pointed away from a worst-case Grade III injury and more toward a Grade I or II.

Williams has not missed a game because of injury in his NFL career. The Bears will conduct further imaging Monday before offering a firmer update.

Minnesota won a low-scoring, sloppy game decided by field goals and a blocked kick. Aaron Jones ran for 105 yards and Will Reichard made three field goals for the Vikings.

Chicago managed 297 yards of offense after exploding for 552 yards the previous week. The loss and Williams’ status now become the central questions heading into Week 3.

The Bears will wait on Monday’s tests to determine how long their starting quarterback might be sidelined.
