Celtics Get Big Jayson Tatum Update Hours Before Season Opener

As the Boston Celtics open their 2026-27 season Tuesday afternoon in Detroit, the most important development is the version of Jayson Tatum they are bringing with them.

The preseason finished a perfect 4-0, the roster has been reshaped around new pieces, and the real games are here.

Tatum, now in his tenth year, remains the unquestioned centerpiece, and those closest to him say something has shifted.

Derrick White, who has shared the floor with Tatum through a championship, the long recovery from injury, and the latest roster turnover, described the difference clearly.

“I think when you’re sitting on the sideline for as long as he did you kind of see the game a little bit differently,” White said. “I just think he’s more confident. I mean, I thought he looked pretty good last year, so just getting that confidence and over the mental hurdle.”

That hurdle was real.

Tatum tore his Achilles in May 2025 and spent more than 10 months away from the court. When he returned late last season, the scoring and rebounding numbers looked solid across roughly two dozen games, yet the efficiency lagged and the explosive first step was inconsistent.

Questions about whether he was fully back followed him into the playoffs and the summer. White’s comments suggest the player who arrived for training camp has moved past that uncertainty. The hesitation has faded, and the trust in his body appears restored.

The limited preseason sample supported the observation. In two appearances, Tatum scored 23 and 19 points while showing cleaner decision-making and a greater willingness to attack the paint instead of settling for jumpers.

Coach Joe Mazzulla noted the improved defensive activity and the smoother offensive flow. Those flashes matter more now that Jaylen Brown is in Philadelphia.

Defenses will focus on Tatum as the primary threat every night, with Paul George, Payton Pritchard, and White taking on larger roles around him. Everything still runs through the former All-NBA forward.

Boston’s expected opening lineup features White, Jordan Walsh, Tatum, George, and Mitchell Robinson, with two-way guard Devin Carter sidelined by mononucleosis.

The opponent is a Pistons team that posted the East’s best record last season at 60-22 before losing in the conference semifinals, then added John Collins and Isaiah Joe while moving on from Tobias Harris and Isaiah Stewart.

The Celtics went 1-3 against Detroit a year ago, so the opener is an early measure of chemistry for a group still learning one another.

White has seen the best versions of Tatum and the versions still climbing back.

His assessment heading into the first game that counts is straightforward: the confidence is there, the mental barrier has been cleared, and the work of proving it begins in Detroit.
