The St. Louis Cardinals enter the 2026-27 offseason looking to reverse a disappointing sub-.500 campaign, and one of the more intriguing paths toward contention involves acquiring left-handed starter Reid Detmers from the Los Angeles Angels.

A former first-round pick who has shown flashes of dominance, Detmers finally delivered a full-season breakthrough in 2026, posting a 3.36 ERA over 185 innings with 211 strikeouts and a 1.04 WHIP.

For a Cardinals rotation in need of a reliable front-line arm, he represents a controllable, relatively affordable addition who could slot in as an Opening Day starter.

Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report recently identified a trade for Detmers as the most likely move for the Cardinals this winter, noting that the left-hander is under team control for two more seasons via arbitration, with a projected 2027 salary around $7.5 million.

Miller argued that landing a legitimate ace would position St. Louis as a popular pick to surge from below .500 in 2026 toward a possible first-round bye in the 2027 playoffs, even as the club also faces questions at third base.

He further pointed out that the Cardinals have rebuilt their farm system substantially over the past two years, giving them the prospect capital to make such a deal work without gutting the organization.

That assessment aligns with broader trends around Detmers and the Angels.

Fresh off his best major-league season, the 27-year-old has drawn interest league-wide, including near-misses at the 2026 trade deadline.

Under new ownership following the sale of the franchise from Arte Moreno to Stan Kroenke, the Angels appear more open to a genuine rebuild after years of treading water.

Moving a pitcher with two years of control who just established himself as a high-strikeout starter would generate a meaningful return while clearing salary and roster space.

For St. Louis, the fit is straightforward: Detmers’ combination of swing-and-miss stuff, solid workload, and remaining team control matches a club that has prioritized restocking talent but still needs an impact arm to contend in a competitive National League Central.

Whether the Cardinals ultimately pursue him will depend on the price in prospects and how other needs, particularly at third base, factor into their offseason plan.

Still, the idea of pairing Detmers with a rejuvenated Cardinals lineup offers a plausible blueprint for a quick turnaround, one that has already drawn attention as the winter approaches.

We’ll see if St. Louis ultimately decides to pursue him.
