Arizona Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett left SoFi Stadium on Sunday with more than a road win.
After the Cardinals stunned the Los Angeles Chargers 26-14 in Week 1, the veteran quarterback triggered a $285,000 contract bonus that had been sitting in the fine print of his reworked deal.
Spotrac highlighted the clause after the game: Brissett collects that amount each time he takes at least half of Arizona’s offensive snaps in a victory, up to a maximum of ten wins.
The Cardinals were 9½-point underdogs in Jim Harbaugh’s building, yet they never trailed after the first quarter. Brissett completed 27 of 37 passes for 277 yards and a touchdown without an interception, adding a handful of designed runs.
A blocked punt and a short scoring toss to Trey McBride in the fourth quarter helped seal a result few outside the Arizona locker room expected. For first-year head coach Mike LaFleur, it was the first Cardinals coaching debut victory since Don Coryell in 1973. For Brissett, it was also a payday.
The incentive sits inside a one-year, fully guaranteed $15.5 million contract Brissett negotiated himself after skipping voluntary offseason work.
Arizona had planned to pay him far less as the leftover year of a prior deal. Once it became clear he would open the season as the starter, the sides recast the agreement with a void year that lowered the 2026 cap hit while giving Brissett starter money.
Additional bonuses of $1.25 million for 24 touchdown passes and $1.4 million for 3,500 passing yards can push the package toward $21 million. Last season he finished one touchdown and 134 yards short of those marks.
Win bonuses of this size are unusual because they can be earned repeatedly. Ten qualifying victories would add $2.85 million on top of the guaranteed salary.
Arizona won only three games a year ago, so the cap of ten is more theoretical than immediate. Still, the structure ties extra cash directly to staying on the field and winning, rather than to isolated statistical milestones that can be reached in losing efforts.
Brissett, 33, has spent much of his career as a bridge quarterback. This is the first time he has entered a season as the planned starter with a contract that treats him that way.
Sunday’s performance was efficient rather than spectacular, which is exactly the kind of afternoon that keeps the snaps-and-wins clause in play week after week.
Whether Arizona can keep stacking those wins is another question.
