Cam Newton has spent the last five years away from an NFL huddle, yet the former MVP keeps finding his way back into the conversation whenever a quarterback room falls apart.
After the Atlanta Falcon’s 34-3 collapse against the Carolina Panthers, that conversation grew louder, and Newton’s name sat near the top of it.
The Falcons entered Week 2 without Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. They handed the ball first to Cooper Rush and then to undrafted rookie Jack Strand. Neither could move the offense.
Rush finished 10-of-17 for 86 yards with two interceptions and a lost fumble. Strand’s first NFL pass was tipped, intercepted and returned for a touchdown.
Atlanta still has not run a play in the red zone this season. Head coach Kevin Stefanski, now in his first year in Atlanta after leaving Cleveland, offered a blunt verdict: there is no way to win in the NFL playing like that.
That performance prompted Robert Griffin III, another veteran whose last regular-season snap came in 2020, to post a pointed observation.
“When Cooper Rush and Jack Strand are stinking it up in Atlanta it makes zero sense that QBs like Cam Newton, Jimmy Garoppolo, Ryan Tannehill and myself aren’t the veteran presence in the room to stabilize teams when their QB goes down. These guys were playing for Carolina today,” Griffin wrote on X.
Newton, 37 and still unsigned after last appearing for New England in 2021, had already made a similar case days earlier. He noted that his phone has not rung in five years and argued that managing a game is different from carrying a franchise.
He pointed to recent examples of older quarterbacks being asked only to steady a locker room, not to win Super Bowls. The irony is hard to miss.
Newton grew up in Atlanta, starred at Auburn, and spent the bulk of his prime in Carolina. A late-career stop with the Falcons would have put him on the opposite sideline from the franchise he once defined.
Whether any team actually picks up the phone remains doubtful. Newton has not officially retired, but five seasons away from live contact is a long stretch even for a player of his size and athleticism.
Griffin’s tweet, however, captured a broader frustration among older quarterbacks who believe experience still has value when young or injured starters falter.
Atlanta now prepares for a short week against Green Bay with the same unsettled group. Newton will watch from afar, just as he has since 2021, waiting for a call that may never come.
For one afternoon at least, his name was back in the discussion, placed there by a former Browns quarterback who knows exactly how quickly a roster can need a veteran.
