The Buffalo Bills announced their 2026 team captains on Tuesday, and once again the honor starts with Josh Allen. The quarterback will wear the captain’s designation for the eighth straight season, a stretch that now covers nearly his entire tenure as Buffalo’s starter and the most visible symbol of the franchise’s identity.

Allen’s selection is the least surprising part of the list and also the most meaningful. Since taking over as the face of the organization, he has led the Bills through multiple playoff runs, record-setting offensive years, and the kind of weekly accountability that teammates and coaches cite when they talk about culture.

Naming him captain again is less a vote than a confirmation that the locker room still looks to him first when the season tightens.

He will share the offensive captaincy with tight end Dawson Knox, who is receiving the distinction for the first time in his seventh NFL season.

Knox has been a reliable blocker and red-zone threat for years; the new title recognizes the quieter leadership he has shown in the meeting rooms and on the practice field. Together they represent continuity on a unit that has revolved around Allen’s dual-threat ability.

On defense, inside linebacker Terrel Bernard returns as captain for the third consecutive year. Bernard has grown from a mid-round draft pick into the defensive signal-caller, and his repeated selection underscores how the Bills value communication and consistency in the middle of the field.

He will be joined by outside linebacker Bradley Chubb, a first-year captain in Buffalo after holding the same role with the Miami Dolphins in 2025. Chubb’s presence adds veteran edge-setting experience to a group that has seen turnover.

Special teams captains complete the six-man group. Long snapper Reid Ferguson, the longest-tenured player on the roster, earns the honor for the third time.

His selection highlights the respect the organization gives to specialists who rarely appear in highlight packages but never miss a snap. Defensive back Sam Franklin Jr., a versatile contributor on coverage units, rounds out the captains.

The announcement arrives as the Bills finalize their 53-man roster and prepare for the regular season. Captains in the NFL are more than ceremonial; they handle the coin toss, speak for the locker room in tense moments, and set the daily standard.

By keeping Allen at the center of that group for an eighth year, Buffalo is signaling that its leadership structure remains intact even as new voices like Knox and Chubb join it.

For a franchise that has spent the better part of a decade chasing a Super Bowl, the message is straightforward. The quarterback who has carried the team this far is still the one they want speaking for it.

The supporting captains add depth and fresh perspective, but the core of the leadership stays exactly where it has been since Allen first put on the “C.” That continuity may prove as important as any scheme or personnel move when the games start to matter.
