Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken turned a heated exchange between quarterback Deshaun Watson and running back Quinshon Judkins into a pointed lesson for his offense this week.

The two players clashed during an 11-on-11 practice rep on Friday after a communication breakdown left them convinced they had heard different instructions. Instead of resolving the issue on the spot, they stood arguing, each holding firm to their version of events.

Monken later reviewed the quarterback camera footage and found the scene amusing in the moment. Both players stared at one another, talking past each other rather than finding a solution.

The coach’s message was direct: the argument itself was secondary to the failure to fix the problem quickly. In a game situation, that kind of standoff would not be funny at all.

The formation and play call made the miscommunication relatively easy to correct once the players stepped back and sorted out what each had heard. Monken framed the episode as a teaching opportunity about accountability and efficiency under pressure.

The incident arrived at a notable point in the Browns’ quarterback competition. Watson has begun to separate himself from the pack in recent practices.

On Saturday, he received the bulk of the first-team snaps and worked extensively with players expected to see significant roles, even though Monken had indicated earlier that Shedeur Sanders would take the majority of those repetitions.

A team spokesperson explained that the coaching staff wanted to evaluate specific personnel groupings with Watson. Dillon Gabriel also saw increased work with the second unit. While one practice does not settle the race, the shift marked a clear departure from the more balanced rotation used throughout camp and left Sanders facing a steeper climb in the weeks ahead.

Monken has indicated that a decision on who will start the first preseason game is approaching. Conversations over the weekend and into Monday will focus on how the quarterbacks will be used and which one is best positioned to open the exhibition schedule.

The coach has said the team still intends to give Watson and Sanders one start each before locking in a permanent No. 1, though that plan remains flexible depending on what unfolds in the coming practices and joint sessions.

Preseason games and the upcoming joint practice against the Buffalo Bills will carry substantial weight, especially because those settings introduce the physical element of being hit—something pure practice cannot fully replicate.

For now, the Browns continue refining their offense while emphasizing that small breakdowns must be addressed immediately.

The Watson-Judkins exchange served as a vivid reminder that even talented players can lose focus when communication falters, and that the fastest path forward is solving the problem rather than debating it.
