The Cleveland Browns’ concern over Mason Graham suddenly eased a little this week, even if the defensive tackle’s status for Sunday remains uncertain.

The No. 5 pick in the 2025 draft left the Browns’ Thursday night win over Pittsburgh before halftime, hobbling toward the locker room with a knee injury that looked, in the moment, like the kind of setback a young front could not afford.

After the game, he was already on crutches and in a brace, and the early read around the team was grim.

By Friday, the picture had changed. Imaging showed no structural damage, and surgery was not required. That took the worst outcomes off the table, but it did not clear Graham to play.

The working assumption was still a multi-week absence, which would have ruled him out of the Week 5 trip to face the Jets.

Graham had begun to look like the player Cleveland drafted him to be, a disruptive interior presence rather than a prospect still finding his way, so any stretch without him was going to be felt.

After four days away from the facility, the Browns stopped short of closing the door. Coach Todd Monken said Graham did not practice on Wednesday and left open the possibility that he could work on Thursday.

Playing remains a long shot. Nothing in the public comments suggested the staff was counting on him in New York. What changed the tone was how he looked when reporters saw him.

Cleveland.com’s Ashley Bastock, speaking on 92.3 The Fan, said Graham walked through the locker room without crutches and without a brace. That was a clear step from the night he left the Steelers game.

Bastock called it a good sign and noted that the alternative — a procedure and an absence measured in weeks — would have been far more damaging.

She also put the absence in context: Graham had been the defender generating the most pressure on Cleveland’s line, so even a short layoff forces the rest of the front to cover ground he had started to claim.

If he practices and the knee responds, the Browns are not barred from activating him. Availability and effectiveness are different things, though, and a player who needed a brace and crutches six days earlier is unlikely to be asked to take a full load on the road.

The more useful development is the one the MRI already delivered. Cleveland is not managing a torn structure or a surgery timeline.

It is managing swelling, comfort, and how much a first-year starter can give a defense that has started to rely on him. That is still a problem for Week 5. It is no longer the problem it looked like on Thursday night.
