Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders found himself the target of some lighthearted ribbing during the team’s first training camp skirmish of the summer.
The brief altercation erupted on Saturday between defensive lineman Alex Wright and offensive tackle Tytus Howard, drawing a crowd of players who quickly jumped into the mix.
Edge rusher Jared Verse, who was acquired by the Browns in the Myles Garrett trade aerlier this offseason, found himself near the center of the action before cooler heads prevailed and the sides were separated.
As Verse stepped back from the scrum, he raised his wrist in a clear imitation of Sanders’ well-known signature celebration. The gesture, while playful on the surface, carried an extra edge given how thoroughly the Browns defense has dominated the early unpadded practices.
Cleveland’s defensive front and secondary have set an aggressive tone, highlighted by five interceptions during that same Saturday session alone. Sanders was operating with the first-team offense that day, continuing to share snaps with Deshaun Watson as the competition at the position remains wide open.
This is not the first time opponents have turned Sanders’ celebration against him. Last season, Tennessee Titans players, including defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, mocked the same move after forcing turnovers and recording a sack.
Sanders still responded with one of his strongest performances of his rookie campaign in that contest, accounting for four total touchdowns in a narrow defeat.
The Browns will now take a day off before strapping on the pads for the first time on Monday. First-year had coach Todd Monken has stressed that mistakes are inevitable at this stage.
Monken has made clear that the current period is about pushing limits and evaluating responses rather than drawing firm conclusions about the quarterback battle or any other roster spot.
He wants to see players learn from interceptions and other errors instead of repeating them once the intensity rises with full contact.
Sanders himself has acknowledged the ups and downs inherent in a competitive camp. His priority remains absorbing every detail of the offense so he can operate with complete confidence and command, areas that drew criticism at times during his first year.
The Browns’ first preseason contest arrives on Aug. 15 against the Chicago Bears, giving the entire roster a chance to translate these early sessions into meaningful evaluation under game conditions.
For now, the defense holds the early edge, and the occasional jab at Sanders’ celebration only adds another layer to the intra-squad energy building in Berea.
