Browns Insider Reveals Mysterious Shedeur Sanders Update

The Cleveland Browns’ quarterback competition took an unexpected turn on Saturday, deepening questions about where the hierarchy truly stands between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders.

For much of training camp the process had followed a predictable pattern, with both players rotating through first-team opportunities under head coach Todd Monken. That changed when Monken told reporters in the afternoon that Sanders would handle the majority of the top-unit work.

What actually unfolded on the practice field told a different story. Watson worked exclusively with the first team throughout the session while Sanders was relegated to the second unit, where he shared snaps with fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel.

The discrepancy between the coach’s public comments and the on-field reality immediately raised eyebrows among those watching from the sidelines.

Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com later added a critical detail that made the situation even more puzzling.

“As it turns out, Watson knew right after the walk-through at about noon that he was going with the ones on Saturday, a source told cleveland.com — which was about 45 minutes before Monken told the media that Sanders was still the Day 10 QB1,” Cabot wrote. “Why didn’t Monken tell the media that Watson was working with the ones? It’s a mystery.”

Monken did not address the matter after practice, and the team is scheduled for an off day on Sunday, leaving the explanation incomplete for now. A team spokesman later offered one rationale, saying the coach wanted to evaluate Watson with particular personnel groupings.

On the surface that explanation sounds reasonable. Coaches frequently adjust practice plans to get specific looks at combinations of players. Yet the timing of the decision, combined with the fact that Watson had already been informed hours earlier, suggests the coaching staff may already be leaning more decisively toward the veteran.

For Sanders the day represented a clear step backward. After weeks of competing for the starting role, he found himself fighting simply to stay ahead of another young quarterback for backup snaps.

Training camp is finite, and every practice carries weight as the coaching staff installs its system and evaluates talent. Days like Saturday are rarely wasted on meaningless rotations.

Whether this single session proves to be a temporary adjustment or an early indicator of Watson locking down the job remains to be seen.

What is clear is that the Browns’ quarterback situation has grown more complicated, and the gap between public messaging and private planning has only added to the intrigue surrounding who will ultimately take the first snap of the regular season.
