The Cleveland Browns received a high-profile visitor at training camp Thursday when Colorado head coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders stopped by to watch his son, quarterback Shedeur Sanders, continue his development during the team’s preseason preparations.
Deion Sanders spent time on the field speaking with Browns head coach Todd Monken before practice but kept a low profile throughout the day.
When approached by reporters, Sanders declined interview requests, making it clear he was in Berea simply to support his son rather than become part of the day’s headlines.
Monken welcomed the opportunity to visit with one of football’s most recognizable figures, praising both Sanders’ playing career and his impact as a coach. “It was really cool. I mean, Deion Sanders. Are you kidding me?” Monken said while also crediting him for helping shape Shedeur into the player he has become.
“Forget that it’s Shedeur’s dad,” Monken added. ‘First of all, he did an unbelievable job with Shedeur, who’s a great kid. Deion was an amazing football player, a hell of a baseball player and is an amazing coach. Everything he’s accomplished … it was great (to talk with him).”
Monken said that he also discussed NIL, Jackson State and Colorado with Deion. He also mentioned how the Baltimore Ravens almost drafted Shedeur when Monken was serving as Ravens offensive coordinator.
The younger Sanders remains firmly in the conversation for Cleveland’s starting quarterback job as training camp continues.
While the Browns have not announced any changes atop the depth chart, Monken noted that Shedeur has made encouraging strides since arriving in the organization and continues to develop within the offense.
Thursday’s practice followed an eventful opening day of camp, when veteran quarterback Deshaun Watson struggled through portions of team drills. Monken later explained that those plays served as valuable teaching moments for the entire quarterback room rather than defining moments in the competition.
Shedeur Sanders has also drawn praise for his leadership away from the spotlight. Earlier in camp, he remained on the practice field after workouts to mentor rookie quarterback Taylen Green, a gesture that has been viewed positively by teammates and observers as the competition unfolds.
With his father watching from the sideline, Thursday offered another reminder of the attention surrounding the Browns’ quarterback battle.
Although Deion Sanders chose not to address the media, his presence underscored the growing interest in Shedeur’s progress as Cleveland evaluates its options ahead of the 2026 season.
