The Milwaukee Brewers quietly closed the book on one of their youngest arms this week, releasing 19-year-old right-hander Merwin Manrique from their Dominican Summer League roster just as the major-league club prepared for the finale of its series against the New York Mets.
The move, logged in official minor-league transactions, ended a brief and largely unsuccessful stay for the Venezuelan pitcher who had signed a minor-league deal with Milwaukee in mid-January 2025.
Manrique arrived as a compact 5-foot-10, 176-pound prospect with little professional track record. What followed was a stretch of appearances that quickly revealed the same underlying problem: he could not throw enough strikes.
In 16 games totaling 14.2 innings, he walked 30 batters, hit seven more, and allowed 21 earned runs. The resulting line—a 12.89 ERA and 3.20 WHIP—left little room for optimism. Strikeouts were scarce as well, totaling only 12.
Broken down by outing, that meant fewer than one punch-out per game, nearly two walks every time he took the mound, and a hit batter roughly every other appearance. He pitched in just seven games during the 2026 season itself, suggesting the organization had already seen enough.
At the lowest rungs of affiliated baseball those numbers stand out for all the wrong reasons. Command problems of that magnitude rarely correct themselves quickly, and the Brewers elected not to wait.
The decision is easier to understand when viewed against the rest of Milwaukee’s pitching pipeline.
Three of the club’s top-10 prospects are pitchers, and ten of the top 30 overall also throw. The organization is not short of arms who have already shown more polish and projection.
Thursday night’s game against the Mets, featuring Jacob Misiorowski opposite 34-year-old Sean Manaea, therefore proceeds without any ripple from the release.
Fans watching on SNY or Brewers.TV will see a club still chasing a second series win over New York this season. For Manrique the professional chapter in Milwaukee simply proved too short and too wild.
Not every signing works out, even when the player is young and the investment modest.
In this case, the red flags around control were too consistent to ignore, and the Brewers moved on.
