The Milwaukee Brewers prepare to host the Atlanta Braves for the start of a weekend series Friday afternoon at American Family Field, looking to build on recent momentum as they push through the heart of the National League Central race.

The club entered the matchup after a 7-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night, also played in front of the home crowd. That win provided a solid foundation heading into a stretch against a familiar rival.

One key piece still missing from the lineup is outfielder Sal Frelick, who has remained sidelined since July 17. The team has continued to monitor his progress closely while navigating games without his presence in the outfield and at the plate.

This week brought the latest information on Frelick’s recovery path.

MLB.com reported on August 19: “Was in Milwaukee on Aug. 18 to work out with the Major League team before returning to the Minors to continue his rehab assignment. The Brewers want to see two pain-free days throwing before they consider adding Frelick back to the bigs.”

Based on that assessment, Frelick stands as a possible return candidate as early as Friday when the series against Atlanta begins. Any activation would depend on how those throwing sessions go in the coming days.

Before the injury forced him from the field, Frelick had posted a .236 batting average across 90 games. He collected 65 hits during that span, along with four home runs and 34 runs batted in.

He also scored 33 runs and swiped six bases while contributing steady defense. Those numbers reflected a solid if not flashy contribution to the Brewers’ everyday mix.

Selected in the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft, Frelick has developed steadily within the organization. The 26-year-old is now in the midst of his fourth major league season, all spent with Milwaukee.

His defensive skills earned recognition in 2024 when he captured a Gold Glove Award at age 24. That honor underscored the value he brings with the glove, an asset the team has missed during his absence.

Manager and coaching staff have spoken in the past about the boost Frelick provides once healthy, noting his ability to impact both sides of the ball. Bringing him back would add depth and flexibility to an already competitive roster.

The Brewers sit in first place in the National League Central with a 79-49 record through 128 games. Their strong showing has positioned them as legitimate contenders capable of a deep postseason run.

Over the past 10 contests, Milwaukee has split its results at 5-5. At home, the club has been particularly effective, going 43-23 across 66 games at American Family Field.

Following the series with the Braves, the Brewers will travel to face the New York Mets beginning Tuesday night at Citi Field. That road trip will test their consistency against another competitive National League opponent.

Fans and analysts alike will watch closely for any updates on Frelick’s status throughout the weekend.

A return would inject energy into a lineup that has performed well even without him, potentially strengthening Milwaukee’s push toward October baseball.
