The Atlanta Braves plan to act as buyers ahead of the 2026 Major League Baseball trade deadline, with starting pitching emerging as their most urgent priority.
While additional offense in the outfield or at shortstop could prove useful, team officials face a clear need to strengthen the rotation if they hope to make a serious World Series run.
Pitching depth across the league offers several options this summer. Still, one name stands out above the rest for a club with championship aspirations: Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal.
Landing the two-time Cy Young Award winner will not come easily. Competition from other contenders is expected to drive the price high.
Yet ESPN analyst David Schoenfield has forecast that Atlanta will ultimately secure Skubal, largely because of a standout young arm in its system. That prospect is 19-year-old Cam Caminiti, a left-handed pitcher regarded as the organization’s top talent.
In assessing the field of potential suitors, Schoenfield noted the relative strengths of several farm systems.
“The Dodgers, Brewers and Rays all have better farm systems than the Braves — but Atlanta does have the best pitching prospect among the four teams in Cam Caminiti, and the Tigers would likely want a young pitcher in return,” Schoenfield wrote.
Any deal for Skubal is projected to require a substantial package of talent. Atlanta could gain an advantage, however, by centering negotiations around Caminiti.
Surrendering a high-upside prospect for a player under control only through the end of the season would represent a significant sacrifice. Skubal’s track record, though, places him among the most attractive short-term acquisitions in recent baseball history as the back-to-back Cy Young recipient.
This season he has posted a 2.79 ERA and ranks among the sport’s elite starters. For a Braves staff in clear need of reinforcement, his addition would deliver a major upgrade heading into the postseason.
The Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Dodgers and Tampa Bay Rays each possess strong collections of position-player prospects. Atlanta’s edge, according to the analysis, rests with Caminiti as the premier pitching prospect those clubs could offer Detroit from among active contenders.
Trading the teenage left-hander would weaken the Braves’ farm system considerably. Securing Skubal, however, could provide the boost necessary for an extended October run.
Pairing the Tigers ace with veteran Chris Sale for the final stretch of the regular season and beyond carries inherent risk. Officials weighing the decision may conclude the potential reward justifies the cost.
