The Boston Red Sox enter a pivotal stretch of the season with encouraging news on the injury front. After a brief scare involving outfielder Wilyer Abreu, the club has confirmed he is ready to return to the field as the team opens a four-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Abreu took a pitch that caused swelling above his shin guard, forcing the Red Sox to scratch him from the Saturday lineup. He appeared only as the designated hitter the following day.

Manager Chad Tracy’s decision to restore him to right field and the third spot in the batting order for Monday night’s contest signals that the swelling has subsided and Abreu is cleared for full defensive duty. Sonny Gray is scheduled to start for Boston opposite Jameson Taillon of the Blue Jays.

The timing could hardly be better. Abreu has been one of the most productive hitters in baseball over the past month, leading the majors with nine home runs in the last 30 days.

Across 114 games this season he is batting .255 with 64 runs scored, 111 hits, 20 home runs and 63 RBIs. His .460 slugging percentage and .790 OPS underscore the consistent impact he has provided throughout the campaign, particularly during the Red Sox’s recent surge.

That surge hit a temporary speed bump over the weekend. Boston dropped two of three games to the Athletics, a club sitting well below .500 at 47-71.

The setback interrupted what had been a strong run, yet the Red Sox remain firmly in the American League playoff picture.

Their 64-53 record ranks third in the league, though the two teams ahead of them both reside in the AL East. The Tampa Bay Rays hold a seven-game lead, while the New York Yankees sit just a game and a half in front of Boston.

Abreu’s presence in the outfield and the heart of the order should help the Red Sox regain momentum against a Blue Jays club that presents a stiffer challenge than the one they faced in Oakland.

His ability to drive the ball and contribute defensively has been central to Boston’s offensive balance, and Tracy’s willingness to insert him immediately into the starting lineup reflects confidence in his recovery.

As the series begins, the Red Sox will look to Abreu and the rest of a lineup that includes Ceddanne Rafaela in center, Willson Contreras at first base and Jarren Duran in left to generate the kind of production that carried them through much of the summer.

With the division race tightening and September approaching, every healthy bat matters. Abreu’s return offers Boston a timely boost as they attempt to climb back into contention for the AL East crown.
