The Boston Red Sox have been one of the more surprising teams in the early going of the 2024 MLB season. They have gotten out to a 7-3 start, keeping pace with the red-hot New York Yankees in what will be a very competitive AL East race this season.

Unfortunately for the Red Sox, keeping pace has gotten a little more difficult. They received some devastating news on starting shortstop Trevor Story on Tuesday afternoon, as he will not be back on the field this season for the team.

It was announced that Story would be undergoing season-ending surgery on his shoulder to repair a fracture. The procedure is set for Friday and Story will be sidelined for at least six months for recovery, said Craig Breslow, the team’s chief baseball officer.

The fracture occurred on Friday, April 5th when the Red Sox were facing off against the Los Angeles Angels. Story was attempting to make a diving stop on a hit by Angel’s star Mike Trout when he suffered the devastating injury.

Prior to the injury, Story had started all eight games for the Red Sox as he was finally getting back to some normalcy. After starting his Boston career out at second base, Story moved back to his natural position of shortstop in 2022. Unfortunately, for him and the team, his tenure in Beantown has been plagued by injuries.

In his first season with the Red Sox, Story played in only 94 games as he dealt with serious injuries to his right hand and left foot. Last season he played in only 43 games as he got a late start recovering from surgery to his right throwing elbow.

Now, this season’s campaign will come to a close after only eight games. Story is only halfway through a six-year, $140 million deal that he signed with Boston during the 2022 offseason, which has not panned out as well as anyone had hoped it would.
