The Boston Red Sox, sidelined after a lackluster wild card loss to the New York Yankees, observed the American League Championship Series from afar. One of their pending free agents might have been eyeing a potential new team.

After parting ways with Rafael Devers, the Red Sox saw a boost in their standings, but more roster changes loom. The team faces crucial decisions, including negotiations to retain Alex Bregman, who is expected to opt out of his contract.

Additionally, outfield power hitter Rob Refsnyder is approaching free agency, and his return remains uncertain.

Recent reports indicate the Red Sox have initiated preliminary talks with Refsnyder about staying, though no agreement is close.

“Though he’d mused about the possibility of retiring after the 2024 season, the 34-year-old plans to play in 2026 and has had informal talks with the Sox about a possible return, though he should have a healthy market given his production against lefties and strong clubhouse reputation,” Alex Speier reported for The Boston Globe.

Despite these discussions, Refsnyder could be bound for a new team. Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer forecasted that he might sign with the Seattle Mariners following their ALCS elimination.

“Refsnyder isn’t as good a fit for this Mariners team as he is for the Red Sox, who have a largely left-handed lineup,” Rymer stated in his prediction. “We nonetheless like him as a platoon partner for (Dominic) Canzone, both of whom would also be insurance for (Victor) Robles if he can’t recapture the magic he found in Seattle in 2024.”

With numerous teams seeking a bench player strong against left-handed pitching, Refsnyder is likely to attract significant interest in free agency. The Red Sox will need to formalize negotiations soon if they aim to keep him.
