The Boston Red Sox entered Saturday’s meeting with the Kansas City Royals looking to halt a three-game slide after falling 3-2 in Friday’s series opener.

The loss left the American League East club searching for any adjustment that might spark a rebound at Fenway Park, and one of the first visible changes appeared in the batting order.

Caleb Durbin, who had occupied the seventh spot the night before, was moved down one place to eighth, via Underdog MLB. The shift followed a 1-for-4 performance against Kansas City in which the third baseman collected a single but otherwise struggled to generate extra-base damage.

Managerial lineup cards often reflect recent results as much as long-term evaluation, and Durbin’s modest night provided the immediate justification for the drop.

The rest of Saturday’s order featured Roman Anthony in left, Michael Gasper at designated hitter, Adley Rutschman catching, Wilyer Abreu in right, Trevor Story at short, Nick Sogard at first, Jarren Duran in center, Durbin at third, and Anthony Seigler at second, with Ranger Suárez on the mound.

The construction kept most of the club’s established names in familiar roles while sliding Durbin toward the bottom of the nine.

Durbin is in his first season wearing a Red Sox uniform after spending his rookie year with the Milwaukee Brewers.

In 140 games this year, he has posted 12 home runs, 23 doubles, 62 runs batted in and a .248 batting average. Those numbers sit close to the 11 homers, 53 RBI and .256 mark he compiled across 136 games as a first-year player in Milwaukee.

The consistency suggests a player who has adapted reasonably well to a new organization even if the average has dipped slightly.

He arrived at Saturday’s game on a two-game hitting streak. Whether that modest run survives a lower spot in the order remains to be seen, but the move itself is not unusual for a club trying to find rhythm in September.

Lineup tinkering of this kind rarely signals a larger judgment on a player’s future; it more often represents an attempt to change the sequence of at-bats and perhaps create a different matchup or momentum late in the game.

For a Red Sox team that has leaned on Durbin’s glove at third and his occasional power, the hope is that a fresh look in the eighth hole produces better results than Friday’s quiet night.

Kansas City will present another test, and Boston will be eager to convert any small offensive adjustment into a win that stops the slide before it lengthens further.

Durbin’s next few plate appearances will offer the first evidence of whether the drop in the order was merely cosmetic or the start of a more productive stretch.
