Boston Red Sox Conspiracy Receives Major Update

The Boston Red Sox are finished for 2026, swept out of the American League wild-card series by the New York Yankees in two lopsided losses at Yankee Stadium.

The elimination left the usual wreckage of a short series, but one image from Game 2 on September 30 has outlasted the scoreboard.

After Sonny Gray was lifted for Garrett Crochet and the Yankees pulled away, clips circulated of the right-hander touching his neck before a pitch. Online, that gesture was read as evidence he had something on his skin and was doctoring the baseball.

Neither the umpires nor the Yankees treated it that way in real time. On Thursday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic told Foul Territory he does not see a case that can be reopened after the fact.

“That is something the umpires would have needed to catch and address, and they did not, so I don’t know that retroactively, MLB is going to step in simply by looking at video when you can’t touch Sonny Gray’s neck anymore and see what’s going on,” Rosenthal said.

“I know what the videos look like, I know we live in a conspiratorial kind of society right now where we all think something’s up all the time. But if the umps didn’t flag it, the Yankees didn’t flag it, I think we’ve got kind of a non-issue.”

That reading tracks how the league has policed foreign substances since the crackdown on Spider Tack and similar products.

Umpires routinely check pitchers as they leave the mound, and a rival dugout that believed a ball was being altered would have had every reason to ask for an inspection in a playoff game.

No such request was made, and no warning or ejection followed. With the series already over and the Red Sox eliminated, a video review cannot recreate a physical check that never happened.

The noise arrives at an awkward moment for Gray’s own future.

Boston acquired him from the St. Louis Cardinals last November to steady a rotation, and the 36-year-old answered with one of the stronger seasons of his career: 29 starts, an 18-5 record, a 2.72 ERA across 169 innings, 149 strikeouts and 4.3 WAR.

He has also hinted that this winter could be the end. If he walks away, the lasting picture will be that regular-season work, not a neck tap that the people charged with judging it declined to treat as a violation.

Speculation will keep circulating anyway. Rosenthal’s point is narrower.

In a sport that has spent years teaching umpires to look for sticky stuff, an unflagged gesture in a lost playoff game is not the same thing as proof.
