The Toronto Blue Jays delivered difficult news Thursday about young outfielder Addison Barger, confirming that his 2026 season has come to an early end because of an elbow injury requiring surgery.
Barger, 26, will have the procedure Monday with Dr. Meister. Officials have not yet determined whether he needs a full Tommy John reconstruction or the less extensive internal brace option.
The announcement lands as the Blue Jays sit last in the American League East with a 47-56 record. The club has struggled to regain the form that carried it to the World Series a year ago.
Mitch Bannon of The Athletic first reported the development, noting that Barger’s campaign is officially finished.
Manager John Schneider addressed the loss of his versatile player.
“It’s tough to lose the whole year of at bats, reps, performance,” Schneider said. “We were counting on him, obviously, to be a big part of our team. You can see how much you miss him, for sure.”
Barger has not appeared in a major league game since May 9 against the Los Angeles Angels. He managed just nine games this season, finishing with a .045 batting average, a .214 on-base percentage and a .091 slugging percentage. His OPS sits at a meager .305 with two runs batted in.
Over three big-league seasons, Barger has posted a .223 average, .283 on-base percentage and .412 slugging percentage, along with 28 home runs and a .695 OPS.
The injury news quickly circulated among baseball observers. Reporter Keegan Matheson noted the potential timelines: a full Tommy John procedure could sideline Barger for roughly nine months and eat into next season, while an internal brace might allow a return in about six months.
A third account, TalkinBaseball_, pointed out that Barger went just 1-for-22 in his limited action and that the surgery would likely keep him out into 2027.
The Blue Jays trail the Tampa Bay Rays (59-43), New York Yankees (57-45), Boston Red Sox (52-49) and Baltimore Orioles (50-53) in the division standings.
Toronto recently finished a series against the Rays and now heads to Fenway Park for a three-game set with the Red Sox. After that, the club visits Nationals Park to face Washington.
