The Buffalo Bills made a bold statement in March, securing star pass-rusher Gregory Rousseau with a four-year, $80 million contract extension. The deal was designed to reward his potential and anchor the defense for years to come, building on two eight-sack seasons over the prior three years.
But six games into the 2025 season, Rousseau’s production has fallen short of expectations, sparking concerns about the team’s highest-paid defender.
According to Pro Football Focus, Rousseau ranks second on the Bills in pressures (16) and hurries (12) through the first six contests. Those numbers reflect consistent disruption, yet they’ve translated to just 1.5 sacks—tying him for fifth on the team.
Among the five Buffalo players with 75 or more pass-rush snaps this season, Rousseau’s pass-rush win-rate sits at a modest 11.4%, the fourth-lowest in that group.
The sack disparity is particularly stark when compared to his teammates. Defensive tackles DaQuan Jones and Ed Oliver, edge-rusher Joey Bosa, and safety Cole Bishop have all surpassed Rousseau in sacks. His two tackles for loss also trail several others: rookie Deone Walker leads with seven, followed by Oliver (five), cornerback Tre’Davious White (four), and linebackers Terrel Bernard and Shaq Thompson (three each).
This underwhelming output earned Rousseau an unflattering label from Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon, who dubbed him Buffalo’s most-disappointing player of the young season.
“The highest-paid defensive player on the roster has just 1.5 sacks and four quarterback hits in six games,” Gagnon wrote. “He beats out Matt Milano, who simply can’t stay healthy. Bills fans should be used to that by now.”
Rousseau’s track record suggests this slump could be temporary. Over his first four NFL seasons, the former first-round pick has demonstrated elite upside as a young edge defender.
He’s recorded 50 or more pressures and 37 or more hurries in each of the last three years. His 2024 campaign marked a true breakout, with career highs of 70 pressures, 42 hurries, and 17 quarterback hits, per PFF data.
For a Bills defense relying on Rousseau to generate consistent pressure opposite veterans like Bosa, the early returns have been frustrating. While his pressure totals remain solid, converting those opportunities into game-changing plays will be crucial.
Buffalo invested heavily in Rousseau’s ceiling—now, the 25-year-old must climb back toward the form that justified the franchise’s faith. As the season progresses, all eyes in Western New York will be on whether he can silence the doubters and reclaim his trajectory as one of the league’s rising pass-rush threats.
