Despite his agreement to become the next head coach of the University of North Carolina’s football team, Bill Belichick’s contract with the school remains unsigned, fueling ongoing speculation about a potential return to the NFL.

CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reported that there is currently “no fully-executed and signed contract” between Belichick and UNC. This lack of a finalized agreement could create legal uncertainty if Belichick decides to re-enter the NFL, with industry sources suggesting it could complicate any buyout situation should he choose to leave for another job.

Belichick’s decision to join UNC, which marked his first foray into college football, was announced earlier this year, but the details of his contract are still unresolved. UNC officials have stated that it is not uncommon for coaches at the collegiate level to begin work without a fully signed contract, with the school noting that some coaches have worked for a year before signing a formal agreement.

Michael Lombardi, UNC’s general manager, attempted to quell the rumors by asserting on social media that Belichick is not interested in returning to the NFL. Despite Lombardi’s statement, speculation surrounding Belichick’s future persists, especially after the Dallas Cowboys decides to part ways with head coach Mike McCarthy earlier this week.

Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz reported that Belichick might have been interested in the Cowboys’ vacancy, given his strong relationship with the Jones family. This has only fueled the rumors of Belichick’s possible return to the NFL, though Lombardi’s comments suggest the Tar Heels are confident that Belichick is committed to his new role.

All signs point to Belichick moving forward with UNC, but his ability to convince top recruits of his dedication to college football will be crucial. At 72 years old, Belichick’s attempt at coaching in college football will face intense scrutiny, and uncertainty about his contract could undermine his credibility with potential recruits.

Bill Belichick, who built an unmatched legacy in the NFL, must navigate these challenges to replicate his NFL success in the college ranks with the Tar Heels.
