The Chicago Bears have quietly entered the conversation surrounding Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea, according to the latest update from NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo.

With Vea having requested a trade after contract extension talks stalled earlier this summer, general managers across the league have begun checking in to gauge the Buccaneers’ willingness to move the veteran interior presence.

Garafolo reported that while a deal is not imminent, several teams have reached out.

“My understanding is there has been communication between the sides,” Garafolo said on NFL Network. “A deal is not imminent. Teams have called the Buccaneers to see if they’re interested in trading him. Among them, I’m told, are the Bills, the Bears, the 49ers, and there are a few others as well. But the Buccaneers continue to say internally they are not trading Vita Vea.”

For the Bears, the interest makes sense on paper. Chicago’s defensive line has shown flashes of disruption but has lacked a consistent, high-level anchor in the middle capable of occupying blockers and generating consistent pressure.

Vea, a former first-round pick who still produces at a high level, recorded 51 pressures, four sacks, and solid run defense last season while logging heavy snap counts. At 28, he remains in his prime and could provide the kind of immediate interior stability that helps elevate the players around him.

Vea is entering the final year of his current contract and is set to earn roughly $18 million in 2026. The top of the defensive tackle market has climbed into the $30-plus million range, with some deals approaching $38 million. That disparity has clearly frustrated the player.

He has not been practicing with the Buccaneers and has made his displeasure known in subtle ways, including not wearing his team jersey during a recent joint practice.

His agent has been even more direct, stating that he does not see the situation ending in anything other than a trade.

Whether the Bears ultimately pursue a serious offer remains to be seen. Acquiring Vea would require navigating Tampa Bay’s public stance that he is not available, along with the cost of both draft capital and the large extension Vea will demand.

Still, the fact that Chicago’s name has surfaced among the teams making calls suggests the front office is at least exploring options to fortify the defensive interior before the season begins.

For a Bears team looking to take another step forward on defense, a proven veteran like Vea would represent a meaningful upgrade if the price and the Buccaneers’ willingness ever align.
