Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson has observed a transformed quarterback room this spring, with renewed optimism largely centered around franchise signal-caller Caleb Williams.
As the team participates in organized team activities, the coaching staff notes clear advancements across the entire group entering its second year within the offensive framework. This progress allows the unit to bypass introductory lessons and concentrate on finer points that elevate overall performance.
Instead of dedicating precious on-field sessions to installing core concepts, the Bears are now prioritizing the polishing of execution and broadening their playbook. Johnson highlighted how familiarity has streamlined daily operations in meetings and practices.
“Everyone knows what the expectations are in the building, what meetings look like,” Johnson said. “There’s just a different level of, I don’t want to say comfort, but they know. They know what it’s supposed to look like.”
This heightened awareness has enabled the quarterbacks to process information more quickly than during the previous offseason. The result is a noticeable uptick in tempo and decisiveness on the field, which coaches believe will translate into greater efficiency during games
“From an offensive perspective, you certainly see a lot of guys picking up where they left off, and I know our quarterback room is at a different place than it was a year ago,” Johnson said. “You see that guys aren’t thinking as much. They’re now being able to play faster.”
As Williams prepares for what many view as a critical third season in the league, the coaching staff sees him assuming greater responsibility for the offense. His leadership extends well past arm talent, encompassing the ability to direct teammates and anticipate defensive adjustments with growing sophistication. While encouraged by these strides, Chicago’s coaches continue to challenge the young passer in specific developmental areas.
A primary focus remains elevating Williams’ completion rate. After posting a 58.1 percent mark in the 2025 campaign, the quarterback is being urged to reach new levels of accuracy. Johnson pointed out that top-tier passers routinely hover near the 70 percent threshold, with anything above 65 percent representing solid professional standards.
To drive this improvement home, the Bears meticulously monitor every pass attempt throughout practices. Quarterbacks receive comprehensive daily feedback that breaks down completion rates, dropped passes, outcomes from scramble situations, and broader efficiency metrics.
“Completion percentage is something that we’re going to emphasize,” Johnson said. “They got the chart of what was our completion percentage, who had drops, what did our scramble drill look like.”
Beyond raw completion numbers, the emphasis centers on precise ball placement that allows receivers to gain additional yardage after securing the catch. This approach aims to unlock the full potential of Chicago’s skill-position players within the structured offense.
At the same time, the Bears remain committed to preserving the improvisational flair that defines Williams’ game. During Thursday’s OTA session, the quarterback showcased this trait by uncorking an impressive deep ball while drifting outside the pocket, connecting with wide receiver Rome Odunze. Backup passer Case Keenum estimated the aerial distance at approximately 67 yards, marking one of the standout moments of the spring.
Wide receiver Luther Burden III commended the play, underscoring the extensive preparation the offense has invested in handling chaotic scramble scenarios this offseason. Williams followed up that throw with additional big gains, including a wheel-route connection with running back D’Andre Swift and a long completion to rookie wideout Zavion Thomas.
Though the offseason program remains in its early stages, feedback on Williams has been consistently enthusiastic from players and coaches alike. More significantly, Johnson senses a newfound poise and mastery from his quarterback that simply did not exist at this juncture twelve months ago.
For a Bears organization eager to witness a substantial jump in Year 3, these developments signal promising momentum heading into the upcoming campaign.
