With the NBA Lottery completed, ESPN recently released their first mock draft for all picks. Here’s who they had the Atlanta Hawks pick with the first overall pick.

In a shocking development in the 2024 NBA Lottery, the Atlanta Hawks will have the first overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. Despite having just a three percent chance of getting the No.1 overall pick, it will be the Hawks on the clock first when the NBA Draft starts.

This is a massive deal for the Hawks, as obviously, they weren’t the worst team in the NBA this season, and now will be in a position to select the best player in the draft. Recently, ESPN released its first mock draft. They had the Hawks selecting Alex Sarr from Perth. Here’s what they had to say about the pick.

The Hawks caught lightning in a bottle in Sunday’s lottery, converting on just a 3% chance to win (10th-best odds) the top pick. Suffice it to say, this is a major stroke of fortune for Atlanta, which doesn’t control its own first-round pick again until 2028, owing future picks and swaps to the San Antonio Spurs. This had been viewed as an offseason of potentially big changes for Atlanta, as the Hawks weigh the luxury tax and attempt to navigate their way out of the middle of the Eastern Conference standings. Now they’ll unexpectedly have a chance to pick who they want from atop the draft.

This was projected to be an interesting offseason for the Hawks to begin with before they were awarded the first overall pick, and things will just get even more interesting. Coming into the offseason, the major question surrounding the Atlanta Hawks was what the team might do with Trae Young.

Young’s name has been mentioned in rumors for quite some time now, and if the right offer came on the table, the Hawks might have decided to pull the trigger. Now that the Hawks have such a valuable asset with the first overall pick, they can either look to build around Young or potentially move him and go into a full rebuild with a lot of good draft capital.

For the selection itself, Sarr is a very versatile big man who would complement Young nicely on both court ends. With an ability to play either the 4 or 5 positions, Sarr fits nicely with the Atlanta Hawks.

While it seems like Sarr is the likely No.1 pick now, it will be interesting to see if Young is his teammate next season.
