The Atlanta Braves did not make a speech about Dominic Smith. They simply left him off the roster.

Hours before the National League Division Series opens in California against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the club posted the group that will travel for the first two games. Smith, who had been on the Wild Card roster that swept through Philadelphia, was not on it.

DaShawn Keirsey and Luke Williams came off with him.

Lane Thomas, JR Ritchie and AJ Smith-Shawver went the other way, joining the series roster after sitting out the first round. Mark Bowman of MLB.com was the one who put the swap in plain terms, and the reaction online did the rest.

The timing is what made the omission feel sharp. Smith had drawn multiple starts in a three-game series against the Phillies, enough that his absence now reads less like a quiet roster trim and more like a correction.

So how does a player who was in the lineup against Philadelphia get dropped for the next round in favor of Rowdy Tellez? One answer circulating among followers was matchup math.

Smith has not hit left-handers well, and the Dodgers are expected to open the series with two left-handed starters who already punish left-handed bats. Another view was blunter.

Smith should not have been starting those Wild Card games, and general manager Alex Anthopoulos removed the option before manager Walt Weiss could use it again. A third note pointed backward:

Smith’s numbers against Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola were usable, Thomas had been hurt, and the same profile looks less useful against Los Angeles.

None of that erases what Smith has already done. The Braves are his sixth organization and this is his tenth major-league season, the first of them in Atlanta. The Mets took him in the first round of the 2013 draft.

Washington, Boston, San Francisco and Cincinnati came after that.

He closed the regular season at .253 with nine home runs and 46 RBIs in 108 games, a useful corner bat rather than a star, and the sort of veteran a contender keeps around until the opponent changes.

The Braves earned the right to make that calculation. They finished the Wild Card series with a 6-2 win over the Phillies at Truist Park and moved on in three games.

October rosters are not loyalty documents. They are answers to the next pitching staff. Smith’s answer, for now, is a seat outside the active group while Atlanta tries to solve the Dodgers.
