The Houston Astros enter the 2026-27 offseason still searching for stability and production in the outfield after another year of revolving-door usage at the position.

The club finished 81-81 to capture the AL West, but its outfield ranked among the league’s least productive groups, with multiple players starting in left field and center field and no one locking down everyday roles outside of Cam Smith in right.

Yordan Alvarez provided elite offense primarily as the designated hitter, yet the grass remained a clear area of need, especially with Daulton Varsho heading to free agency after a limited and injury-affected stretch following his midseason acquisition from Toronto.

Jim Bowden of The Athletic identified the Astros as the top team fit for free-agent center fielder Trent Grisham in his ranking of the top 40 free agents.

Bowden listed Houston ahead of the Kansas City Royals as the best destinations for the left-handed-hitting outfielder, noting that the Yankees appear ready to move on and give Spencer Jones a clearer path to regular playing time.

Grisham broke out with the Yankees in 2025, posting a .235/.348/.464 line to go along with 34 home runs before accepting a one-year qualifying offer worth just over $22 million.

He could not replicate that production in 2026, posting a .211/.308/.395 slash line with 18 home runs and a 95 OPS+ while appearing in only 121 games because of injury.

Bowden projects a significant pay cut, forecasting a one-year, $12 million contract for Grisham as he seeks a new home.

For Houston, that projected price point aligns with a roster that already carries substantial commitments and is navigating a front-office transition.

Grisham’s Gold Glove pedigree and power potential offer a low-risk way to stabilize center field without committing multi-year dollars in a market that includes higher-priced options.

Of course, Grisham has declined defensively, and his bat is very inconsistent, but he does offer some potential for a Houston squad that is not as spendthrift as other big-market clubs.

The affordable Grisham comprises a practical target for an Astros team that has relied on internal depth and shorter-term additions to patch outfield holes.

Adding a veteran who can handle center field and provide occasional power could give the Astros a more reliable everyday option as they try to build on their postseason appearance and address one of the roster’s clearest weaknesses.

We’ll see if Houston decides to pursue Grisham this winter.
