With the Baltimore Orioles seeking to make a run in the playoffs this season, who would be the perfect trade target for them before the trade deadline?
The Baltimore Orioles are off to a great start in 2024, as their rebuild has resulted in them having a lot of young talent on the team. Baltimore looks like it has one of the best lineups in baseball and that lineup is young and not going away anytime soon.
As they gain experience winning, the Orioles could seek to make another big move before the trade deadline. Recently, ESPN spoke about who would be the best target for them before the trade deadline. Here’s what they had to say.
Weakness: Starting pitching
Best match: Garrett Crochet
The Orioles showed this winter that they have the gumption to deal with their surfeit of young position players, and Corbin Burnes has been nothing short of magnificent since coming over from the Brewers. Will they do it again, though? Tommy John surgeries for Kyle Bradish, John Means, and Tyler Wells have gnawed away their rotation depth.
Starting pitching is certainly a need for the Orioles, but they do have an ace in Corbin Burnes. The trade for Burnes has worked out very well, and the Baltimore Orioles might look to make another big splash.
There are a few things to like about Garrett Crochet if the Orioles decide to pursue him. With a young core on offense, adding Crochet would give them a talented young starting pitcher who is under team control for a few years as well.
While the Orioles can win now, they also have to think about the future and sustaining success. Since Crochet is young and under team control for a while still, the asking price is going to be high.
The Baltimore Orioles do have the farm system and young talent to pull off a trade for him, but they have to make sure that the timing is right for the franchise and not rush into something. As Baltimore continues to battle with the Yankees for AL East supremacy, expect to see them linked to starting pitchers at the deadline.
