Analyst Shares Bold Pittsburgh Steelers Prediction for 2024

Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has had historic success with the franchise. He has the longest streak of finishing a season .500 or better to start a head coaching career in NFL history.

Tomlin has been head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers for 17 seasons and has yet to have a single losing one. Will that change in 2024? In the opinion of Vic Tafur of The Athletic, this season is when the streak comes to an end.

Tafur recently put together an article selecting how each team would do against their over/under total for the season. The Pittsburgh Steelers line is set at 7.5 wins, and Tafur believes they will go under that, giving Tomlin his first losing season ever.

“Another trap line. Surely this team is as good as last season’s 10-game winner with new quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, running game guru Arthur Smith at offensive coordinator and solid draft picks like Troy Fautanu and Payton Wilson. But Pittsburgh was 9-2 in games decided by seven or fewer points, and while there will be some correction there anyway, it also comes with a brutal schedule.

They better get off to a great start because their nine games after their bye week are brutal: vs. Baltimore, at Cleveland, at Cincinnati, vs. Cleveland, at Philadelphia, at Baltimore, vs. Kansas City and vs. Cincinnati,” Tafur wrote.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are certainly going to have their work cut out for them in 2024. That end-of-the-season gauntlet would be challenging for the best teams in the NFL, as Pittsburgh doesn’t play a divisional game until Week 11.

That quirk definitely makes for an extremely difficult end to the season. They have one of the toughest schedules in the NFL in 2024, but it is very risky to bet against Tomlin to not figure it out and squeak out games they have no business winning.

Alas, the deck is stacked against them. They have three sets of back-to-back road games this season, including the first two weeks of the season. Pittsburgh will rack up the air miles early in the season with trips to Denver and Las Vegas as well.

If the Pittsburgh Steelers offense is improved in 2024 with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, they should flirt with being over .500 again. They have a very strong defense and Tomlin is one of the best in the business as head coach.
