Analyst Reveals Best New York Giants Player Who Could Be Cut

Darren Waller, New York Giants

The New York Giants made a concerted effort this offseason to upgrade their offense. They started in the trenches, focusing on the offensive line in free agency with multiple veteran additions.

Jon Runyan Jr. was signed away from the Green Bay Packers to bolster the interior at guard. Jermaine Eluemunor was signed away from the Las Vegas Raiders, following offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo from Sin City.

Running back Saquon Barkley was a huge loss, but the team did sign Devin Singletary to help soften the blow. A draft pick was also used on Tyrone Tracy Jr. At wide receiver, the team made a huge splash using the No. 6 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on LSU star Malik Nabers.

He joins what can be an explosive group that includes veteran Darius Slayton, Wan’Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt. However, the position that many people are keeping a close eye on now is tight end.

That is where the New York Giants have veteran Darren Waller. His future with the team is up in the air, as he is contemplating retirement. That is a major reason why David Kenyon of Bleacher Report has named Waller as the best player the Giants could release this offseason.

“Darren Waller has been transparent about considering retirement this offseason, so it’s no coincidence the Giants drafted Theo Johnson in the fourth round. New York presumably will keep Waller if he decides to play, but the team would save $6.7 million if he’s released,” wrote Kenyon.

In addition to selecting Theo Johnson out of Penn State in the fourth round, the New York Giants made depth signings. Jack Stoll and Chris Manhertz were signed in free agency, joining holdovers Daniel Bellinger, Lawrence Cager and Tyree Jackson.

New York is certainly operating like a team that isn’t expecting Waller to be in the mix in 2024. If he changes his mind and does return, it will be another solid weapon for Brian Daboll and his staff to work with. But, the team is certainly prepared should he opt for retirement, making him an easy cut candidate to save cap space.
