Alabama wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams made a statement on the field and then another off it.
In the Crimson Tide’s 48-10 season-opening win over East Carolina, he hauled in five catches for 130 yards, giving the offense an explosive presence after a long offseason of anticipation. Quarterback Keelon Russell set the tone as well, completing 18 of 30 passes for 256 yards and adding 86 yards on 13 rushes.
The pair helped Alabama look sharp heading into a Saturday visit to Kentucky, where the No. 12 Crimson Tide will try to improve their record against a Wildcats team that opened with a 45-13 win over Youngstown State at Kroger Field.
Before that matchup, Coleman-Williams delivered career news of his own. On Tuesday he announced that he had signed with Nike and joined the brand’s Blue Ribbon Elite NIL roster.
“From looking up to the Swoosh as a kid to representing it today. Proud to join the Nike family and continue building my legacy at Alabama!” he wrote on Instagram.
The deal is part of a broader expansion of Nike’s three-decade partnership with the University of Alabama. The company added 18 Crimson Tide athletes across nine sports, eight of them football players. Coleman-Williams is joined by Russell, running back EJ Crowell, receiver Cederian Morgan, cornerbacks Zabien Brown and Dijon Lee Jr., safety Bray Hubbard and linebacker Yhonzae Pierre.
Nike described the program in sweeping terms.
“Blue Ribbon Elite reimagines the NIL space by providing leading athletes and universities an unmatched level of collaboration that prioritizes the future of sport and athlete identity,” the company said.
Until now, the Blue Ribbon effort had been limited to Texas, LSU, Clemson and South Carolina. Alabama’s inclusion marks a significant widening of that circle and gives Williams a high-profile commercial platform while he continues to develop as one of the Tide’s most dangerous skill players.
The football program is dealing with a mixed injury picture as it prepares for Kentucky. Running back AK Dear and defensive back Jireh Edwards are listed as questionable while they work back from preseason injuries.
Wide receiver Noah Rogers, the NC State transfer who missed the East Carolina game, remains out. Starting right guard Michael Carroll is doubtful after playing 74 snaps in the opener without allowing a sack.
Those absences will test Alabama’s depth, but the early production from Coleman-Williams and Russell offers a reminder of what the offense can look like when its playmakers are healthy and clicking.
The Kentucky game will show how quickly the Tide can absorb those losses and keep building on an opening-week statement.
