The New York Yankees are placing Aaron Judge on the 10-day injured list with a right calf strain, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported Friday.
The move becomes official Saturday, the team announced. A corresponding roster move comes at the same time.
Judge left Wednesday’s game at Minnesota in the sixth inning. He said afterward that he felt something in the first inning and decided to come out, and he described the problem only as lower body.
He went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts before Heliot Ramos pinch-hit for him. The Twins won 5-4 in 12 innings.
The timing is the problem. Judge had returned Sept. 8 from a rib injury that cost him more than three months, and he went 4-for-21 with a home run and three RBIs in the games since.
He hurt the rib diving for a ball in late April and played through pain for more than a month before landing on the injured list in late May.
New York clinched a playoff spot this week. The Yankees sit second in the American League East, six games ahead of Boston, and are positioned for the top wild-card seed.
The offense collapsed without him. During his absence, the Yankees ranked 28th in runs, 28th in OPS, 29th in wRC+ and 30th in batting average.
Judge and Ben Rice had accounted for 38 percent of the team’s home runs at the time of the rib injury.
He is a three-time AL MVP.
The Yankees have carried other injuries into the final stretch. Center fielder Trent Grisham has been out since Sept. 5 with a Grade 2 hamstring strain, and Aaron Boone said Sunday it is uncertain whether Grisham returns during the regular season.
Giancarlo Stanton has played 24 games this season. He went on the injured list in April with a left calf strain, moved to the 60-day list in August and has kept hitting without a firm timetable.
Judge has dealt with a calf strain before. He went on the injured list with one in August 2020 and missed about two weeks.
Boone had not said Friday whether Judge would be available for the postseason.
