The New York Yankees have been navigating a challenging stretch without their star captain Aaron Judge, yet the slugger points to an internal issue beyond his absence that is hindering the club. Amid a six-game losing skid that has left them trailing the Tampa Bay Rays by 2.5 games in the American League East, Judge has voiced concerns about his teammates’ concentration levels.
Judge has been sidelined since May 31 with a stress fracture in his rib cage, creating a significant void in the lineup. Early in June, the team showed resilience by securing 10 victories in their initial 15 contests without him.
However, momentum faded as they closed the month with a 12-14 record, including losses in nine of their last 11 outings. This pattern marks the fourth consecutive June downturn for the franchise.
Team leadership has been vocal about the visible dip in performance. Fellow standout Cody Bellinger highlighted a shortage of energy just before the squad suffered a lopsided 9-3 defeat against Tarik Skubal and the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday. The Yankees wrapped up that contest with another early deficit and an error, extending their defensive miscues to five across the past seven games.
Addressing the media ahead of Wednesday’s series closer against Detroit, Judge delivered pointed yet constructive feedback on the group’s mindset.
“Just a little lack of focus,” Judge said on Wednesday. “We just gotta dial it in.”
Beyond immediate results, Judge steered the conversation toward the organization’s broader ambitions. He reminded players of the ultimate prize that continues to drive the franchise.
“Our ultimate goal is to win a World Series,” Judge said. “I think guys have to remember that every single day they show up here. We’re here to win a World Series.”
He stressed the importance of consistent daily effort regardless of recent outcomes.
“That should motivate you every single day you step on that field, no matter what happens, no matter what happens the day before. ‘I got a job to do.’ We’ve got an important sign when you walk out on the field. It’s the last sign you see before you’re out there; it says do your job. Guys are here to do their job.”
As a three-time American League MVP who claimed the honor in each of the past two seasons, Judge brings unmatched credibility to his words. The lone exception in recent years came in 2023, when a toe injury sustained at Dodger Stadium forced him to miss 56 games. That season ended with an 82-80 mark and a playoff absence, underscoring just how pivotal his contributions remain to team success.
On the offensive side, the Yankees have encountered additional difficulties during the current slide, scoring only 15 runs across the losing streak. With both Judge and Giancarlo Stanton unavailable, the remaining hitters appear to be forcing situations rather than trusting the process. Judge has observed this tendency firsthand.
“I feel like right now, collectively, guys are trying to do too much and be the one guy that will hit the grand slam with nobody on,” Judge said.
Even while acknowledging his own impact on team morale, Judge emphasized the need for self-assurance in his absence. The captain believes the roster possesses the talent and mindset to rebound, provided they recommit to fundamentals and collective focus.
