Los Angeles Rams defensive end Myles Garrett remains on injured reserve and will miss at least one more game while recovering from knee surgery, coach Sean McVay said Monday.
The team has not set a firm return date beyond the league’s four-game minimum. McVay indicated Garrett continues to advance in his rehabilitation but stopped short of projecting how many additional contests he could sit out.
“I know he’s making really good progress. We haven’t talked specifics like that,” McVay said.
Garrett, acquired in a June trade from the Cleveland Browns, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee shortly after the season opener. He has not appeared since that game.
The Rams placed him on injured reserve, which requires him to miss a minimum of four games. With the team at 2-2 entering its Week 5 matchup against the Buffalo Bills, that minimum still includes Monday night’s contest at SoFi Stadium.
Eligibility to return opens in Week 6 against the Arizona Cardinals on Oct. 18. Whether Garrett will be ready then remains unclear.
McVay said he plans to review the latest medical updates with Reggie Scott, who oversees the Rams’ sports medicine department, in the coming days.
“That’ll be something that I talk with Reggie about in the next couple days,” McVay said. “Probably be better equipped to give you some clarity about that on Thursday.”
Garrett dealt with knee swelling through much of training camp and was limited in the Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia. He finished that game without a tackle.
The 30-year-old entered the season as the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year after recording a league-record 23 sacks for Cleveland in 2025. He has 125.5 career sacks.
The Rams sent edge rusher Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick and a 2029 third-round pick to the Browns to complete the deal. Verse had earned Pro Bowl recognition in each of his first two seasons.
Los Angeles opened the year as a Super Bowl favorite in part because of the addition. The team has gone 2-2 without him after the opener, beating the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles while losing to Denver.
Pass rush production has fallen to Byron Young and other rotational players during the absence. The Rams rank second in the NFL in total defense through four games but have generated fewer pressures than projected with Garrett sidelined.
McVay has repeatedly stressed that the priority is a full return to form rather than an early activation. Reports in late September suggested a recovery window of roughly six weeks, which would push a potential debut past the Cardinals game, though McVay said at the time he was not familiar with that specific timeline.
The club expects more precise information after this week’s medical review. Garrett’s status for the stretch run will shape how the Rams approach a schedule that includes consecutive games against the Cardinals, Raiders and Chargers after the Bills.
