The Atlanta Braves’ return to Truist Park arrives with the National League Division Series level at one game apiece, and with a separate piece of news attached to the player the Braves most often count on to change a scoreboard.

Before Tuesday’s Game 3 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the club announced that first baseman Matt Olson is its finalist for the 2026 Hank Aaron Award.

The series opened Saturday in Los Angeles, where the Dodgers took a 5-3 win. Atlanta answered Sunday, 3-2, to send the best-of-five back to Georgia tied. First pitch Tuesday is scheduled for 6 p.m. EDT.

In the hours before that game, the Braves posted congratulations to Olson and pointed fans toward the voting page for the award, which goes each year to the best overall offensive performer in each league.

It was created in 1999 to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of Hank Aaron passing Babe Ruth on the all-time home run list. A panel of Hall of Famers shares the decision with a fan vote.

Olson’s regular-season case rests on volume and power more than a high average. Across 162 games he hit .251 with a .321 on-base percentage and a .502 slugging percentage, finishing with 41 home runs, 93 runs batted in and 4.4 wins above replacement.

That line put him in a National League group that also includes Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani, Philadelphia designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, Cincinnati first baseman Sal Stewart, San Diego right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. and St. Louis outfielder Jordan Walker.

The American League slate runs from Houston’s Yordan Alvarez and Tampa Bay’s Junior Caminero and Yandy Díaz to Boston’s Willson Contreras, Detroit’s Riley Greene, New York’s Ben Rice and Kansas City’s Bobby Witt Jr.

October has been quieter for Olson than the summer was. Through the Braves’ postseason games so far he is 3-for-19 with one home run and two walks.

The nomination is for the full season, not the series, but the timing still puts his name next to a matchup in which Atlanta needs the middle of its order to look more like the club that reached October than the club that has struggled to string hits together against Los Angeles.

None of this is a late arrival. Olson is in his eleventh major-league season, the first six of them with Oakland before he joined the Braves.

His career totals sit at a .256/.347/.507 slash line, 329 home runs, 901 runs batted in and 44.2 wins above replacement, with four All-Star selections, three Gold Gloves and a Silver Slugger.

The Hank Aaron finalist list is another marker of that production. Whether the award follows is a separate vote.

On Tuesday night, the more immediate question is whether the same bat that produced 41 home runs can tip a tied series in front of a home crowd.
