Former Oklahoma Sooners edge rusher Marvin Jones Jr. was released from the Washington Commanders’ practice squad on Thursday, ending a brief stop that never got the 2025 Sooner onto an NFL active roster, via the NFL transaction wire.
Jones, a 6-foot-5 outside linebacker out of American Heritage in Plantation, Florida, signed with Washington on Sept. 16 after Seattle cut him from its practice squad.
He was placed on the practice squad injured list on Sept. 29, alongside the news that linebacker Leo Chenal was headed to injured reserve. Two days later, the Commanders released him.
He did not appear in a regular-season game.
For Oklahoma, the move closes the first chapter of a career that started in Norman as a transfer project and ended, at least for now, as an undrafted free agent looking for another roster.
Jones arrived in Norman for the 2025 season after stops at Georgia and Florida State.
He was part of Georgia’s 2022 national championship team, then posted four sacks in nine games at Florida State in 2024 before joining Brent Venables’ defense.
In crimson and cream, he played in 13 games and finished with 21 tackles, five tackles for loss and two sacks, including a sack in the College Football Playoff first-round loss to Alabama.
The production was modest for a senior edge, but the frame and the pedigree were enough to draw a look after he went unselected in the 2026 draft.
Seattle signed him in May. He was waived at final cuts on Aug. 30, returned to the practice squad the next day, and was released again on Sept. 5. Washington was the next call.
Practice-squad deals are short by design, and an injury listing made this one shorter still.
Teams can only carry so many developmental edges, and Jones never got the elevation that would have put a Sooner jersey on an NFL Sunday.
He is the son of former NFL linebacker Marvin Jones, and the résumé still has a national title and a year in the SEC on it. At 22, he is young enough that another practice squad remains realistic.
Thursday’s transaction simply means the next one will not be in Washington, and that Oklahoma’s latest undrafted edge is back on the wire after a stay that lasted a little more than two weeks.
