The New York Mets will spend October as spectators while the rest of baseball chases a title, and that idle month already has a familiar theme: they need pitching.

After a last-place finish in the National League East in 2026, the club’s winter shopping list starts with starting depth.

One name that has already surfaced is Shane Bieber, the former American League Cy Young winner and two-time ALl-Star who spent the past two seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays and is expected to reach free agency once this season ends.

Bieber is no longer the pitcher who dominated the American League in 2020. He is, however, still a known quantity with a championship résumé and a track record of missing bats when healthy. That last clause matters.

Over the last two seasons he has thrown only 95.1 innings. A late-season injury in 2026 cut his year short after 11 starts, a 5-2 record, and a 4.37 ERA in 55.2 innings.

Those numbers are a long way from his peak, and they explain why any team that pursues him will be buying both pedigree and risk.

The Mets connection comes from FanSided’s Jake Elman, who placed New York among clubs that should add a veteran starter this winter. The reasoning is straightforward. Freddy Peralta and Clay Holmes are gone. Kodai Senga may be traded or shifted toward relief work.

That leaves president of baseball operations David Stearns looking at a rotation that still needs innings and experience. Bieber, if healthy, can provide both.

Whether he is the right expensive bet is another question. A front office that just watched several high-priced acquisitions underperform may prefer a more durable arm if it is going to spend heavily.

That caution is fair. The Mets did not collapse from a single failure. They received too little from several well-paid players, including Jorge Polanco, Devin Williams, and Luis Robert Jr., and finished last despite a stronger close to the schedule.

Stearns now has to turn that disappointment into a roster that can compete in a division that will not wait for Queens to get healthy. Wholesale change is expected.

The details are not public yet, which is why names like Bieber circulate so quickly. He is available, he has won at the highest level, and he would not require the Mets to invent a new identity on the mound. He would only require them to believe the next healthy season looks more like the old Bieber than the injured one.

Free agency does not open until November. By then the Mets will know more about their own pitching picture and about Bieber’s medical file. Linking the two now is speculation, not a signing. It is also a reminder of how quickly a lost season turns into an offseason argument.

New York needs starters. Bieber needs a team willing to bet that a former Cy Young winner still has enough left. Those two needs may meet. They may also pass each other by if Stearns decides the safer splash is a pitcher who has actually stayed on the mound.
