The San Francisco 49ers’ offense is expected to have one of its most important pieces available Sunday, after reports indicated Mike Evans will play against the Arizona Cardinals.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler first relayed that the veteran wide receiver was good to go, and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport quickly echoed the same update.
For a team that opened the season with two wins and a thinned receiving corps, the news landed as a meaningful boost heading into Week 3.
Evans left last Sunday’s victory over Miami with a hip injury and spent much of the following week limited. He did not practice fully until Friday and remained listed as questionable into the weekend, leaving his status unsettled until reporters closed the gap.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan had already offered a quieter hint earlier in the week, saying Evans would have gone back into the Dolphins game if the 49ers had needed him.
That comment framed the hip issue as something the club treated with caution rather than as a long-term problem. The team simply kept his practice volume down instead of rushing him through extra reps.
The timing matters because Evans is no longer a complementary signing. San Francisco lost Ricky Pearsall for the season during training camp, which immediately shifted more of the passing-game burden onto the former Tampa Bay star. Evans has answered that call so far.
Through two games, he has hauled in nine of his ten targets from Brock Purdy for 103 yards and a touchdown, and he played more than three-quarters of the offensive snaps in Week 1.
That workload is likely to look similar against Arizona if he is cleared as expected.
Durability has defined most of Evans’ career. He reached 1,000 receiving yards in every season except 2025, when hamstring and collarbone injuries limited him to a sliver of his usual production.
San Francisco signed him in free agency because that track record still looked rare: a big, reliable target who can win outside and give a quarterback a consistent landmark.
Purdy already has shown comfort finding him early in the season. Having Evans on the field again gives the 49ers another proven option as they try to keep their 2-0 start intact.
The Cardinals present a different test than Miami, and San Francisco will want its top targets healthy if the game tightens.
Evans’ clearance does not guarantee a huge statistical day, but it does restore the shape of an offense that has leaned on him more than originally planned. After a week of uncertainty, the latest reports suggest the 49ers will not have to invent a workaround on Sunday.
